A Day in the Life of a Headteacher

7.20am: I sit in the car on my way to work. I think about our wonderful caring staff team, feeling very lucky, wondering whether parents realise just how important they are to children’s happy times at school. I thought you might like a peek into my day……

--------------------------------------

I arrive in bright sunshine to see children piling out of cars to do early morning football, followed by some scrummy food in our well-run breakfast club. Some staff are already inside school, as others arrive, parking, walking, smiling, chatting; tired, weighed down by heavy bags, [possibly wishing it was a day off to go to the beach] but all ready to work and looking forward to a busy, exciting day with your little ones.

During the morning I see lovely things happening. As I put my head round a door, there’s a TA working 1:1 helping a child to pronounce words more clearly; I walk along the corridor, what’s this? – oh dear someone’s had a little accident – TA to the rescue to comfort and discreetly provide a change of undies. “What’s that, you’ve done some good work and your teacher wants me to see it…fantastic work, wow, no wonder you’re proud!”.  In the hall some super drama work; TA, teacher and pupils so completely absorbed, they don’t even notice me.

I look through windows into classrooms along the corridor: this class are cheering as a boy and girl challenge each other at ‘Hardspell’; the next have their eyes fixed on the teacher as she explains something; another class uses the interactive whiteboard to research a topic; this looks fun as they make Aztec artefacts. I make my way through as children discuss the best font to use in work on laptops. In the library a foreign language assistant teaches 4 children a Spanish song. A granny is hearing a boy read, whilst a TA speaks gently to another who seems a bit upset.

The lunchtime supervisors arrive early for an update. A first-aider tends to the scraped knee of a boy who was running across the playground; don’t worry, somebody nice is looking after him. “Yes, I think this pasta’s delicious too”, I say to a girl who refused to speak to grown-ups when she first started school. In the office some children are helping to count out booklets, a parent hands in a holiday form, the phone rings, staff help a colleague at the photocopier. I enter my room and take a horrified look at a pile of papers two feet high, government initiatives, stuff I need to do….the worst bit of the job. What do the ‘powers that be’ really know about children?

An afternoon full of meetings to look forward to. “Yes I would love a cup of tea, you’re an absolute lifesaver!”.  Later I can hear a fascinating story enchanting a small group whilst next door 3 children hear a fable through headphones. A sudden blast of noise as scurrying children leave for home – Bye! A leadership meeting now so we can plan classes for September.  Cleaners and caretaker are busy setting all to rights and making sure we’re spick & span ready for another day tomorrow.

6.30pm, phew I’m really ready for home…only 225 reports still to read and comment on. Well another busy school day’s over. Children and lovely staff made it all worthwhile!

Have a great weekend with those special little ones

Kindest regards
