Welcome to Sporting News

It feels like an appropriate time to give you all an update on all things sporting at school, especially in light of our recent award, more details on that can be found towards the bottom right of this page. P.E. & school sport has never been higher on the Government’s agenda. At Kinson Primary we have grasped the opportunities that have arisen from this to promote sport and physical activity to your children.

What are we doing?

I am extremely proud of the amount of extra-curricular sport that we offer to your children, many of whom do not take part in organised sport outside of school. During my time at Kinson, we have massively increased the range of sports that we offer to the children and at the time of writing the list of teams & clubs that we offer is a long one. Over the course of this academic year we will have competed in cross-country, indoor athletics, tag-rugby, hockey, cricket, kwik-cricket and netball competitions. We also have teams competing in the Year 5, Year 6 and Girls Football leagues. These teams also take part in the cup competitions. Kinson has enjoyed sustained success over the past few years, winning regular medals at the Bournemouth & Christchurch Schools Swimming Gala and in Town Sports. Since I arrived here, teams from our school have won the Y5 football league and the Y6 football league. We have reached the final of the Rounders league twice in the last two years and competed in the final of the Dorset Schools Cricket Cup in recent times.

There are also many more opportunities for children to take part in sporting activities without having to compete. Building on from previous successes such as the trampolining sessions held at Oakmead and every child in school participated in the Tri-Golf day. This year we have provided football coaching, dance club and Fit-Kids for the infant children. In addition to this there will once more be a beach sports day, cricket coaching for interested children in years 3, 4 & 5, skipping club, tag-rugby coaching for children in year 5 & 6, Fit-Kids for Foundation and athletics for year 4 children. It is worth noting here that none of these sessions will cost you anything.

The breadth of this provision has not come about by accident but is the result of many years hard work and a huge amount of goodwill, particularly on the part of the teachers. It is not overstating things to say that the vast majority of that described here would not happen at all without the teachers. This is not part of their job; they are not sports coaches and receive no payment whatsoever for their efforts. I know from my own experience that time spent on the playing fields is time not spent in the classroom, marking, planning and preparing for lessons. These tasks must still be done and therefore inevitably place an additional burden on the staff. We are very fortunate at Kinson that many of the teachers see the importance of providing these experiences for our children and are willing to give up their time to facilitate them.

I would invite all of you to celebrate what we have achieved so far and come and support your children at the games, meetings & tournaments that they compete in and support us as a school. We are always striving to do better, with your constructive support I have no doubt that we will continue to do so. I am always delighted at the number of past pupils who I speak to that are still participating in a sport they first experienced at whilst at Kinson.
